MID AMERICA FREEDOM BAND ANNOUNCES THE HIRE OF NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

The Mid America Freedom Band recently appointed Joyce Anderson Downing, Ph.D., as its new executive director.

“We are very excited for Joyce to take on the role of executive director for the MAFB,” said Dee White-Bradt, MAFB board member and search committee chair. “She brings an exceptional combination of energy, sensitivity, organization, grant writing experience and proven leadership skills.”

Dr. Downing joins the MAFB brining with her 40-plus years of experience after recently retiring from a diverse and distinguished career. She obtained advanced degrees in special education from both the University of Kansas City and UMKC following seven years as a music teacher in the Kansas City, Mo., public schools. Serving in roles from director of research at the Crittenton Children’s Center to professor of special education, department chair and associate dean at the University of Central Missouri, Warrensburg, Dr. Downing has worked tirelessly to enhance the lives of individuals with developmental and intellectual challenges.

“I’m thrilled to be joining MAFB as the band launches its 16th season in a new performing home,” said Dr. Downing. “My experience as a teenager playing with a community band created a special place in my heart for organizations that provide opportunities for local musicians to share their skills, while presenting entertainment that is educational and accessible to everyone. I’m looking forward to applying my experience to this new position with MAFB.”
