Votes for Women! Encore performance added

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Jan. 28, 2018) — The Mid America Freedom Band is offering an additional performance of its Votes For Women! concert at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 25, 2018, due to high demand.

With the 2 p.m. performance of Votes for Women! already sold out, the Mid America Freedom Band is pleased to announce a second performance.

In a continuing educational partnership with the National World War I Museum and Memorial to provide a free concert of World War I-era music for the museum and its patrons, MAFB, for this year’s concert, will highlight the music of the suffragette movement in the United States and Great Britain. The Kansas City Women’s Chorus’ chamber group, Heartsong, will perform with MAFB on selections from the Roby Suffragette Song Book (pub. 1909 Topeka, Kan.), Ethel Smyth’s March of the Women, selections from Mary Poppins, and other suffragette tunes, marches, and waltzes.

“Last year’s Songs of World War I concert was great success and this season, I’m thrilled to drill down all the fantastic repertoire of the early 20th century to focus on the music of the suffragettes, a pivotal movement for civil rights,” said Lee Hartman, MAFB artistic director. “The lead band of the 1913 Women’s Suffrage Procession on Washington ended up being headed by Missouri’s own Alma Nash and her All Lady’s Marching Band out of Maryville, Mo. So during the performance not only are we going to be performing some of the works her band would have played, but we’ll also have members of MAFB and Heartsong read recounts and speeches from that march for an immersive, fun, musical, and ultimately, still relevant experience.”

“This is the first time ever that the Mid America Freedom Band has added a second performance due to high demand, and it’s exciting for not only our audience members, but for our performing members,” said Jessie Riggins, MAFB board chair. “The collaboration with Heartsong from the Kansas City Women’s Chorus is the icing on the cake, and we look forward to joining forces with not only the chorus, but also other Kansas City groups in the future.”

Tickets are free, but to manage space reservations are required. Reservations for the 4 p.m. show are available starting at 9 a.m. on Jan. 31, 2018, at www.freedomband.com. The 2 p.m. show is at capacity.
